Capturing the magic of flight
Overview
Delta Air Lines sought a better way to capture and market their aircraft and product offerings. TRICK 3D partnered with them to create a fully Virtual Fleet of 3D aircraft which now empowers almost every department’s content creation.
My Contribution
My role evolved throughout this 8 year engagement. I started as a 3D Artist, Compositor, and Retoucher, and grew to VFX Supervisor, Art Director, and Creative Director. At all stages I provided hands on 3D and VFX expertise.
Delta’s Challenge
Aircraft availability is a show stopper for onboard campaigns. Shooting onboard real aircraft is costly with lost passenger revenue, logistically challenging with aircraft scheduling, and creatively inflexible with confined spaces. Onboard imagery was difficult to capture, and as a result was scarce, reused, and out-of-date.

A digital fleet to empower Virtual Production
Our virtual fleet unlocked new creative potential previously unseen to Delta. We provided brand consistent aircraft that are always available and photo-ready. With a fleet at our fingertips we kicked off virtual photoshoots to capture moments of on-board travel.
How we did it
Our digital aircraft allowed us to scout shots well in advance of shoots. Within the virtual space we had total freedom to play and explore. In just a few clicks the entire aircraft could be reconfigured. The flexibility of virtual production let us capture images previously impossible on real aircraft.
The virtual aircraft was digitally lit and rendered, then composited with each green-screen image.
Results
We created 100’s of images showing the magic of travel to use within Delta’s marketing campaigns.
Our work in the wild
Our images fed worldwide digital and print campaigns. They were featured throughout delta.com, the Fly Delta app, billboards, in-airport messaging, jetways, on-board print materials, affiliate materials, Delta’s SkyMag, and many more! Our content was also prevalent throughout Delta’s internal and B2B marketing.
